Utah journeyman experience is built on licensed apprentice work

Utah rules use full-time work experience performed as a licensed Apprentice Electrician as the core experience for the journeyman pathway.

The standard education-and-experience path requires 8,000 hours

Utah’s current rule materials identify a journeyman pathway requiring at least 576 total hours of approved electrical study completed over no less than 48 months plus at least 8,000 hours of full-time work experience as a licensed Apprentice Electrician.

An experience-only route requires substantially more field time

Utah also recognizes a journeyman route based on at least 16,000 hours of full-time work experience as a licensed Apprentice Electrician.

Applicants can become exam-eligible before all 8,000 hours are complete in the education pathway

Utah rule materials allow a journeyman applicant on the education-and-experience route to be admitted to the examination after completing the approved program of electrical study and at least 6,000 hours of the required work experience, subject to the Division’s current rules.

Journeyman applicants must pass Utah examinations

Current Utah rule materials require a Journeyman Electrician applicant to pass the Utah Journeyman Electrician written examination with at least 75% and the Utah Electrician Practical Examination.

Out-of-state or nontraditional training can require a competency review

Utah DOPL provides a competency-based pathway for applicants whose education or experience was obtained outside the standard Utah route. Documentation requirements can include education records and detailed verification of work experience.
