Current licensing facts
Oklahoma starts the licensing path with registered apprentice work
CIB directs new electrical workers to work for an active licensed electrical contractor, obtain direct supervision, and register so the hours can count toward journeyman eligibility.
The unlimited journeyman track includes a commercial/industrial minimum
Of the 8,000 required hours, Oklahoma requires 4,000 in commercial/industrial work. This is an important distinction for apprentices tracking experience.
The journeyman exam is open book
Oklahoma’s career-pathway guidance describes the journeyman licensing examination as open book after the candidate has accumulated enough verifiable experience and been approved to test.
Contractor licensing builds on journeyman experience
The unlimited contractor route requires 12,000 total verifiable hours, including 4,000 hours as a licensed unlimited journeyman and 6,000 hours of commercial/industrial work.

Electrical license reciprocity / portability
Oklahoma publishes reciprocal journeyman agreements with Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming. The license must generally be current, in good standing for at least one year, and not grandfathered; the reciprocal application still requires work history and fees.
