Electrical apprenticeship & licensing

Mississippi electrical apprentice requirements.

Mississippi’s statewide electrical licensing structure is contractor-centered. The Mississippi State Board of Contractors regulates Electrical and Residential Electrical classifications, while worker-level apprentice/journeyman requirements can depend on employers, apprenticeship programs, and local authorities.

✓

Mississippi is contractor-centered at the state level

Someone seeking an apprentice or journeyman-style worker credential should verify any employer, apprenticeship-program, city, county, or project-specific requirement in addition to MSBOC contractor rules.

Trade-exam reciprocity does not equal a Mississippi license

MSBOC makes clear that reciprocity waives only the qualifying trade exam when applicable. Applicants still must submit and obtain the Mississippi contractor license and take Business & Law.

Electrical reciprocity is classification-specific

MSBOC currently recognizes electrical exam credit from several partner boards, including Alabama Electrical, North Carolina Electrical, Ohio, South Carolina, and Tennessee under their published conditions.

Electrical license reciprocity / portability

Mississippi reciprocity is a contractor trade-exam waiver, not automatic practice authority. Current MSBOC materials recognize electrical exam credit from Alabama Electrical, North Carolina Electrical, Ohio, South Carolina, and Tennessee under specified conditions; other agreements may cover non-electrical classifications. All applicants still complete Mississippi licensing and Business & Law requirements.
