Current licensing facts
Iowa ties the Class A journeyman pathway to registered apprenticeship
Iowa states that a Class A Journeyman applicant must have successfully completed an apprenticeship training program registered by the U.S. Department of Labor, unless another Board-recognized equivalent pathway applies.
Electrical training programs are recognized through the state licensing system
Iowa’s Electrical Examining Board publishes recognized electrical training programs and identifies routes for approved technical-school graduates as well as traditional registered apprenticeship programs.
State sponsorship is required before taking a licensing examination
Iowa requires applicants who need an examination to submit the appropriate license application and obtain state sponsorship before scheduling the test.
PSI currently tests over the 2023 NEC
Iowa’s Electrical Licensing FAQ states that PSI has tested over the 2023 NEC since January 1, 2024.
Iowa reverted to the unamended 2023 NEC in June 2026, subject to statutory exceptions
House File 2800 took effect June 2, 2026 and eliminated the prior state electrical amendments in administrative rule. Iowa states that electrical installations reverted to the unamended 2023 NEC except for exclusions and amendments written directly into the new law, until the 2026 NEC is adopted.
Iowa maintains journeyman reciprocity with multiple states
Iowa currently lists reciprocal agreements with several states, including Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Reciprocity has separate application conditions and should not be confused with initial apprenticeship eligibility.
