Electrical apprentices must be registered with the state board

Colorado law requires an electrical employer to register an apprentice with the governing board after employment begins. Apprenticeship employers and programs are also required to track and report qualifying practical-training and classroom hours.

Journeyman eligibility centers on 8,000 hours over at least four years

Colorado’s 2025 electrician-licensing legislation states that the journeyman pathway includes a minimum of 8,000 hours of qualifying apprenticeship or practical experience accumulated over at least four years.

Classroom instruction is part of the journeyman pathway

The same legislation addresses 288 hours of training in safety, the National Electrical Code and its applications, and other Board-required subjects within the applicable training, apprenticeship, or practical-experience period.

Long-term apprentices may be required to take the journeyman examination periodically

Colorado law requires certain apprentices who have been registered for at least six years and have accumulated 8,000 hours to take the journeyman examination on the statutory schedule until they pass or qualify for an approved exemption.

PSI is used for the journeyman examination process

The Colorado State Electrical Board has directed eligible apprentices to PSI, the Board’s examination vendor, for journeyman examination scheduling.

Passing the exam does not by itself issue the license

Colorado’s Board guidance makes clear that an applicant who passes the examination must still satisfy all applicable licensure requirements and complete the licensing application process.
