Electrical apprentice exam preparation

Electrical exam test-day checklist.

The day before an electrical exam is not the time to discover that your reference, calculator, identification, arrival plan, or testing rule is different from what you expected.

Confirm the official appointment details

Check the exam date, start time, testing location or remote-testing instructions, check-in time, and the name of the testing provider. Use the official confirmation rather than relying on memory.

Verify required identification and admission items

Review the testing provider’s current identification and admission requirements. Names and document requirements can be specific, so confirm them directly before leaving for the exam.

Check your permitted references

Confirm the required NEC edition and whether supplemental books, tabs, notes, highlighting, or other reference aids are allowed. Bring only items that comply with the current official rules.

Confirm calculator and personal-item rules

Verify whether a calculator is allowed and whether the testing center supplies one or restricts specific models. Also check rules for phones, watches, bags, food, drinks, and breaks.

Plan travel and arrival time

Know the route, parking situation, building entrance, and expected check-in time. Build in enough margin that a traffic delay does not become part of the exam.

Use the final review for familiarity, not cramming

Review formulas, navigation routes, recurring trouble spots, and your test strategy. Avoid trying to learn an entirely new system the night before the exam.

At the exam, work the process you practiced

Read carefully, identify what is being asked, decide whether the answer should come from knowledge, calculation, or Code lookup, and manage time deliberately. Follow the testing provider’s actual navigation and review rules.
